Nowadays, more and more people are working from home. There’s a whole host of reasons for this: you can miss out on that dreaded morning commute, you can be more flexible with your time – the list goes on. Working from home can be a great choice, but there can be a downside too. It’s important to take relevant precautions to stop you from losing your work-life balance.

Whilst working from home is a fairly new thing to a lot of people due to the pandemic, our it’seeze franchisees have been doing it since they began. So, we’ve put together a list of our five most important tips to help you get the most out of working from home.

1. Organise your space

One of the most important things to do when you’re working from home is to organise your space. Find a dedicated area to work and stick to it! Keep that space organised and clean, so not only will it be easier for you to find things, but also it will help get you in the right headspace to work.

Keeping a specific area of your home reserved for work purposes can also help you set boundaries between your work and home life. Too often, people that work from home can find their homes get overrun with work clutter – which can make them feel as though they never fully get a break from work. Reserving a dedicated area for work in your house will make it easier to switch off and walk away at the end of your working day.

2. Get ready as you would for a day in the office

Working from home, it can be so tempting to just work in your pyjamas all day. But, trust us – this isn’t as appealing as it seems. Just like dedicating space in your home can help you get in the right mindset to work, so can getting ready. Having a distinct boundary between being ready to work and being ready to relax, in the way you physically look and feel, can help your brain properly get into work mode.

3. Stick to a routine

One of the great benefits of working from home is how flexible it enables you to be with your time. If you need to do the school run, or schedule personal appointments in the day – you can! As long as you catch up on work at other times, you don’t have to stick to the 9 to 5 working schedule. But, there’s a downside to this! It can be so easy to fall into the trap of working longer hours, or working on weekends – even if you haven’t taken any personal time out that week. That’s why, although the flexibility of working from home is great, you should still try and stick to a routine as much as possible.

4. Get outside!

One of the key things our franchisees comment on is how the commute into work is so much better when they don’t actually have to leave the house, sit in traffic, or get on public transport. But, although the morning commute isn’t anyone’s favourite part of the day, it at least meant you were leaving the house!

Working from home can often mean that some days you may find yourself with no reason to leave the house at all – which might drive you a little bit crazy! That’s why it’s so important to make sure you’re still going outside for some fresh air on your lunch break or after work. Being stuck inside isn’t good for anyone, so getting outside at least once a day will give you a refresh that you probably didn’t know you needed. This will benefit your productivity and mindset at work in the long run!

5. Stay connected

Working from home can often seem quite isolating – with no one physically around you, you might miss having the ability to just call someone over from the other side of the office for a quick bit of advice on whatever you’re working on. However, it’s so important that you don’t fall into the trap of trying to do everything alone. Although you may not get answers as quickly as if you were to call them over and ask in person, it’s still so important to communicate and stay connected with your colleagues – especially if there’s a problem!

Here at the it’seeze franchise, all of our franchisees get dedicated support from our franchise development manager, who’s always available to lend a hand. Our franchisees also get the chance to network with each other, share their insights, and upskill. So, although they don’t work together in person, they all still have the support networks they need around them.

So, there you have it – our five top tips for working from home. Working from home can be a great option for a lot of people, but it’s so important to keep your home and work lives separate as much as you can – even if they are both under the same roof.
